What you’d do
- Read electric, gas, water, or steam consumption meters and enter data in route books or hand-held computers.
- Upload into office computers all information collected on hand-held computers during meter rounds, or return route books or hand-held computers to business offices so that data can be compiled.
- Walk or drive vehicles along established routes to take readings of meter dials.
- Verify readings in cases where consumption appears to be abnormal, and record possible reasons for fluctuations.
- Install new or replace broken meters.
- Inspect meters for unauthorized connections, defects, and damage, such as broken seals.
AI and this job
AI exposure: how much of this job’s work AI tools can do or help with, based on national research. It is not a forecast of job loss.
Lower exposure30 of 100
The index averages three national research measures, each shown as a percentile of all jobs:
- AIOE 17
- Language-model AIOE 17
- GPTs-are-GPTs 57
Observed AI use today: Little or none (Anthropic Economic Index)
AI exposure is lower for this job, and observed AI use is little or none. The bigger change is smart meters that send readings automatically, which federal projections expect to cut the number of manual meter-reading jobs. Entering and uploading data could be sped up by software, while walking routes, checking odd readings, and installing or replacing meters still need a person on site.
Likely to change
- Entering and uploading meter data
- Compiling readings from routes
Still relies on people
- Walking routes and reading meters on site
- Installing or replacing broken meters
What federal projections say
“Capital/labor substitution - share decreases as alternative remote meter reading technologies (e.g., AMR, AMI, and other smart systems) increasingly replace manual meter readings by automatically sending energy usage data.”
